Tatar state theatre of drama and Comedy named after Karim Tinchurin is located in the centre of Kazan, Gorky street. The theatre was founded in 1933 on the initiative of K. Tinchurin.

The building, which houses the theatre was built in 1912 by architect F. R. Amlong. The building was occupied by government agencies and public organizations. The building was rectangular in plan, two-story, designed in the neoclassical style of the early twentieth century. The decoration of the facade of the building designed in the classical style of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1918, the building became known as red Palace.

In 1914 it played dramatic productions city troupe. In 1919 there were performances of the Opera company. Since 1928, the building was occupied by the Tatar academic theatre. At first it was a kolkhoz theatre, then became a Republican Mobile. In 1988 the theater was given the name Karim Tinchurin. Since 1989 Tatar state theatre of drama and Comedy named after K. Tinchurin.

In the early years of the theatre, its executives and Directors were: playwright Reese Ishmuratov, Gali Ilyasov, and Asgat Mazitov. Before the war, the theatre was the only Institute of education in Tatar villages. During the great Patriotic war theater actors performed at military recruiting centres and hospitals. After the war the Directors of the theatre were Gabdulla Yusupov and Suleiman Valeev-Solve.

In 1956, the chief Director of the theater was designated Kashif Tumasheva. After the war in the repertory productions appear foreign authors, Russian and Tatar classics. In 1993 the post of chief Director of the theatre is appointed by the Honored worker of arts of Republic Tatarstan R. M. Zagidullin. In 1999 in the repertory productions appear in a variety of genres.

Today in the repertoire of the theatre includes productions by foreign and Tatar playwrights. Theatre named after Karim Tinchurin makes a great contribution to the preservation of the Tatar language and Tatar culture.

In 2010, the theatre named after Karim Tinchurin was completely renovated. For its reconstruction was spent 230 million rubles.
