Kem district local history Museum "Pomerania" was established in 1980 on the initiative of the head of the culture Department of the O. I. Smolikova and an employee of the magazine "Soviet Belomorye" V. S. Barcinas. The history of the region from ancient times to our days" was the title of the first exhibition opened Museum, which was devoted to the anniversary celebration - the 60th anniversary of the Karelian Labour Commune. Initially the Museum's database consisted of 80 items, which tells about the lifestyle of dwellers as well as information from the documentary and historical Chronicles of the Karelian Pomerania. All of this was donated to the Museum by local historian I. F. Semenov. Over time the Museum has expanded and other historical exhibits such as home work tools, objects of traditional birch bark and decorative arts, fishing tackles.
To celebrate the 200 anniversary of the city in 1985 Kem Museum moved to the old Treasury building Solovetsky monastery, built in 1763. Its new name - "Pomerania", the Museum received in 1991. Municipal institution Kem local history Museum began in 2006.
Today at the Museum "Pomorie" collections in the following areas: Ethnography (Antiques, made of different materials); painting (presented in the form of pictures and icons); documents & photograph; book stock; numismatics and bonistics.
All are collected in a thematic exhibition. Central to the exhibition is called "the Spiritual and material culture Pomors Kemsky uyezd". Occupies almost the entire area of the Museum (more than 200 square meters) and demonstrates the features of the economic and cultural life of Pomors, life which for centuries has been connected with the sea. The main focus of this exhibition is made on the environment Pomors and visually divided into three parts: the seafaring, shipbuilding and marine fisheries.
Also in the Museum you can visit other exhibitions. So in 1999 the exhibition "Orthodox shrines". On the relics exhibition presents not only the official Orthodox Church icons, prayer books, correspondence religious leaders), but also collections relating to the Ritualist (bronze crosses and other artifacts). Yet for a long time Kemsky region was the place of residence conservatives. Currently, this religion has its followers in the Kemsky district and presented as the history of the region at the Museum. The exhibition "Merchant shop" you can see all kinds of spring balance, spring and pharmacy scales and weights, as well as other exciting and necessary items for trade and merchant activity. Since the end of 2000, the Museum holds the exhibition "Bathroom Kem citizen of the early twentieth century". Here you can see the utensils, the furniture, clothes and personal belongings. A selection of varied dishes (wood, clay, copper) since 2001 can be seen in the exhibition "coastal kitchen". All the collections of the Museum "Pomorie" have their own history and arranged so that every visitor feels special atmosphere that leaves no one indifferent.
According to recent reports, the Museum features more than 10,000 historical items. More than 7,500 exhibits of the main Fund and 2700 units of scientific and auxiliary Fund. Among them are the originals, dedicated to the Pomeranian culture, the old believer shrines, objects in copper and a variety of household items: boxes, samovars, dishes, irons and unique photographs that record the history of the Northern region of Russia.
