The Church of St. John the Baptist of the tenth century – the oldest in Eastern Europe ground Christian Church, which has been preserved and is still effective. According to legend, the temple was erected on the site where he preached the Apostle Andrew who founded the first Christian community. In 1999, archaeologists discovered an ancient image of the Christian cross, Dating from the late I – early II century.
This is a small, elegant, built in the Byzantine style Church with a single dome on a high drum. The massive walls are made of alternating bands consisting of white stone blocks and red bricks. The body of the Church rests on four dark-grey marble columns, preserved more of the ancient temple. On the Western side attached stone belfry of the mid-nineteenth century.
In the 80s there was a reconstruction of the Church building. The author of the restoration project of the architect I. E. Lopushinsky. The Church was returned to the lost image of the masterpiece of Byzantine architecture and by 1990, it again became active.
