Vydubychi monastery was built in the 70x years of the XI century by Prince Vsevolod Yaroslavich, the son of Yaroslav the Wise, as a family monastery. The name of the place associated with the legend about the order of Prince Vladimir in the time of the baptism of Rus reset all pagan wooden idols of Perun and other gods in the Dnieper. Devotees of the ancient faith kiyani ran along the river and called the gods to appear and to swim, shouting "Perun Vidovi! ". The place where the idols finally floated ashore, became known as "Vydubychi".

The architectural ensemble of the monastery consists of the Church of the Archangel Michael (1070-1769), George Church (1696-1701), and Saviour Church (1696-1791), built in the Ukrainian Baroque style, and the refectory.

Only some of the churches of the monastery survived the centuries. One of them is the Church of Archangel Michael, built by Vsevolod and partially rebuilt in 1769.

The monastery of the necropolis, which are buried many prominent figures of science, arts and public figures, mostly of the nineteenth century. Buried here Lelyavski, Ushinsky, Afanasiev, Betz and others Here wanted to be buried Taras Shevchenko, but he was disgraced poet, therefore, the city government is not allowed to bury him in the outskirts of Kiev and its surroundings.
