Historical Museum "Fortress" is located in the surviving buildings of the Kislovodsk fortress, which is a monument of history and architecture, and which began the life of the resort. This is the only Russian fortress, preserved in the North Caucasus.

The first earthen fortification, the castle appeared in 1807, and after a short time there was erected a small stone fortress. Most castles of this region after the Caucasian wars were either demolished or dismantled. Left only this, and then - not completely. Stood the fortress of 60. Until today she is preserved gate, corner tower, the city wall with battlements and barracks. After the revolutionary times, the building belonged to the sanatorium "Fortress" is one of the first Soviet sanatoriums.

Historical Museum "Fortress" was founded on 9 may 1965 in people's status. In 1971 it was declared a branch of the Stavropol Museum of local lore. Independent municipal Museum he became in 1998 in 2005, the Museum moved to the boundary of the property. Today the Museum has more than 60 thousand exhibits. The pride of the Museum are its collections of archaeological, ethnographic collection and Kislovodsk porcelain.

The Museum exposition tells about certain historical stages of life of the peoples of the North Caucasus, the role of the Cossacks in the development of the city, the development of Kislovodsk resort search and studying of mineral springs. A huge section dedicated to the city of Kislovodsk as the largest base hospital during the great Patriotic war. The Museum also operates the exhibition under the open sky, the so-called a lapidary.
