The fortress of Kotor – one of the unique attractions. The walls of the citadel surrounding the old part of the city, rising on a rocky hill. Height – 20 inches, length – 4, 5 miles. The thickness of the walls is equal to 16 meters.
The construction of the citadel began the Romans, destroying the base and walls that were built here before the Illyrians. The next person who captured this strategically important Bay, were the Byzantines: they have already destroyed the old citadel and built a new one on its place. Further, the citadel of Kotor has been influenced by many different invaders. The Byzantines in the mid-ninth century changed the Arabs, after which there were Bulgarians, Venetians and Serbs.
A turning point in the history of the citadel was the year 1657. Since that time, about half of the fortress became inaccessible to the public. According to the legend, during the war between the Venetians and the Turks for control of Which, the inhabitants of the city took refuge in the fortress, ready to fight to the end. The Turks failed to conquer the fortress, but residents also are unable to get out because the key to the gate they threw into the sea. Managed to get out after the earthquake that cracked in the wall of the fortress. However, after that it closed and since then the access to the interior of the citadel is impossible.
Subsequently, the fortress was attacked by the French fleet in the early nineteenth century. After that Kotor was liberated by the Russians against the French occupiers and rebuilding of the citadel was completed.
