Fort shants" was built in 1706 during the great Northern war to protect the city from Swedish army. He was the earthen redoubt, erected ahead of the modern right flank of the battery.

Additionally, for the defense of the approaches to both fortifications. Between them appeared a small size of an infantry redoubt "Michael". In the summer of 1855, all these structures radically rebuilt in the course of a rapid increase of Kronstadt, because of the threat of an attack by the Anglo-French squadron. Now on the North shore was stationed battery # 7, called "Alexander-the trench", the South battery No. 8, "Nicholas-the trench, and between them there battery liter "In", which later received the name of "Clumps".

Strengthen seriously upgraded, and they lasted until the late nineteenth century. Then in their place, it was decided to build a set of batteries lasting type, called Fort "shants". But they made the necessary changes in local conditions. Gun battery, in addition to the main armament, equipped with four guns, intended to counter possible enemy landings. For illumination of an adjoining plot RAID on the right flank was placed a spotlight, which was hidden in the mine. After some time on the left flank of the group was built South (cannon) battery, similar to buildings, equipment and armament of the North.

By the 30th year of the twentieth century battery "shants" lost its military significance, the armament was removed, and in part vacated casemates, it was decided to set up a command post of the Commander of the Coastal Defense of the Baltic sea.

During the great Patriotic war on the battery "shants" was not fixed coastal guns, but at the same time, it housed a Separate railway artillery battery No. 19-A (two guns, caliber 180 mm), moving along the branch Kronstadt – "Reef".
