Old town hall is a historic building of Leipzig, this former municipality. The first town hall was built in XIV century, it was later substantially expanded by connecting with a Cloth and Trading houses, is next.

In 50-ies of the XVI century, the building experienced a partial demolition and reconstruction, the Old town hall acquired the elements of Renaissance style, helped by the works of architect and mayor of Leipzig Hieronymus Lotter. The result was the appearance of an elongated building, decorated with 8-coal tower above the entrance and a high attic. The main entrance to this historic building is not in the center, but asymmetrically, closer to the Northern façade. Old city hall had two floors, upstairs there were 28 rooms, is involved in the work of the city Council. Ground floor became the place where the merchants of Leipzig. They used these premises for warehouses and shops.

Subsequently, the building of the Old town hall was enlarged, on the second floor there is a balcony, and then the beautiful chimes of the work of a talented watchmaking masters Georg Werner. Currently this building is among the important buildings in Germany, belonging to the Renaissance. In the process of later reconstructions in 1909 in the niche of one of the facades was built a fountain called "Bathing girl". Bronze figure of girls made by the sculptor Johann Hartmann, and in 1992 it had to be replaced on a copy for the theft.

Until 1905 the Old town hall was used for meetings of the municipal Council, but in 1911 there was opened a City history Museum, among the exhibits of which store is the only portrait of Johann Sebastian Bach, written during the life of the great composer.
