The national Museum is one of the most important in Peru. It stands at one step in its importance and prestige with the National Museum of archaeology, anthropology and history of Peru in Lima. The Museum was opened in 1988 in the capital of Peru. In 1991, the Museum building was damaged by fire, after which the Museum was transferred to the former Ministry of fisheries.

The national Museum in its collections has thousands of original works from different periods of history of Peru, obtained during the archaeological research, as well as the returned artifacts that illegally tried to take over the Peruvian territory smugglers. This large collection of cultural and historical heritage of Peru consists of more than 12 500 pre-Hispanic period, among which is an amazing collection of ceramics, metal, textile cultures of Paracas, Moche, Wari, Chimu and others.

In the Museum you can see reproductions of many famous ancient Andean artifacts, primarily Stele Lanson (900 and 200 BCE), was found during archaeological excavations at Chavin de Huantar, mummies Urine culture, was found in 1987 during excavations of the pyramids near the town of Sipan. Also in the Museum contains more than 2 500 historic works of art of the colonial and Republican periods, as well as more than 15 500 exhibits of contemporary art.

On the sixth floor of the Museum hosts the exhibition of Yuyanapaq Pair Recorder (Yuyanapaq Para Recordar). This exhibition was created to document for posterity the internal conflict in Peru that occurred in the period from 1980 to 2000.

In the halls of the Museum often hosts conferences and educational seminars. Also in the spacious halls of the Museum hosted the V summit of heads of state and government of the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean, may 16-17, 2008.
