Hainburg an der Donau is an Austrian town located in the province of lower Austria, in the district of Bruck an der leitha in 40 km from Vienna. Hainburg is the easternmost city on the Danube, just a few kilometers from the town is the border with Slovakia.

The first inhabitants in the area were the Celts. Today the town is located near an ancient Roman settlement of Carnuntum was the capital of the Roman province of Pannonia, where he lived when mark Aurelius. The Emperor Henry III in 1050 ordered to build the castle Hamburg. Today Hamburg with its city walls, gates and towers is the best preserved fortification in Europe. In 1108, the castle passed into the possession of Babenberg. In 1220-1225 the years, the castle was fortified, there was the Vienna gate (the largest medieval gate built in Europe).

Hainburg an der Donau was granted city rights in the year 1244.

In 1683 the town and the castle was badly damaged during the Turkish war. The population fled from the city, in the narrow alleys stampede occurred and massacre. From the documents of those times it is known that killed more than 8,000 people.

During the Second world war the city was virtually unaffected. After the war, the tobacco factory became the city's main source of income.

In 1984 the project was considered on the construction of a power plant in Hainburg, however, the protests of the citizens were so strong that the Federal government, after several clashes with the police abandoned the project. Today this area is part of the National Park Donau-Auen.

For visitors and tourists the main interest is preserved medieval fortress wall with a length of 2, 5 kilometers with three gates and 15 13th-century towers. Inside the gates of Vienna is an interesting municipal Museum. Also interesting early Baroque parish Church of STS. Philip and James and the column of the virgin Mary in the Rococo style in the Main square of the city.
