National Park Slavin has an area of 721 square kilometers, it flows the famous river Salavin, which is the natural border between Thailand and neighbouring Myanmar (Burma). It originates in Tibet and, stretching more than 3,000 km, runs through China, Thailand and Myanmar. In the local dialect the name of the river sounds like a Us DOE Kong.

Best time to visit the national Park is between March and April, otherwise known as dry season. At this time the water level is small, and the sandy beaches become available. Popular among tourists, the establishment of a tented camp right on the banks of the river Salavin.

The traditional route is boating along the scenic mountain landscapes and small coastal villages. Sailing vessels and elongated motor boats, are a popular choice for traveling around Salavin. Among the local tourist attractions are also worth mentioning, Canoeing, rafting and kayaking.

In case you want to cross the river and land on the shores of Myanmar, be extremely careful. The rebel group the Karen people living on the other side, are quite unfriendly to foreigners.

A large part Salavin consists of high mountains, covered with forests, inhabited by the Thai-Burmese small peoples. The vegetation of the national Park consists of mixed deciduous, dipterocarpus and coniferous forests. It is inhabited by antelope, deer, boars, palm civet (marten), bears, squirrels, Gibbons and various birds.
