Masjid al-Dahab, or Golden Mosque, located in the Manila district of Quiapo, considered the largest mosque in the capital of the Philippines. Its name derives from the huge dome covered with gold. The mosque was built in 1976 specifically for the visit of President of Libya Muammar Gaddafi, who was to act as a mediator between the Philippine government and Muslim separatists from the island of Mindanao. The construction was carried out under the personal supervision of the then First Lady Imelda Marcos. However, almost at the last moment the visit of the Libyan leader was canceled.
Today the mosque is a sacred place for Muslims Manila, living mostly in the districts of Quiapo and Binondo. Especially crowded in the mosque on Fridays during the noon sermon "Juma" - inside can fit up to 3 thousand worshipers. Despite this people's popularity, the Golden Mosque minaret is completely covered with rust, and the dome – partially. However, work on the restoration of the mosque planned for the near future.
Interestingly, in Manila Friday is a "Day of Quiapo", because on that day in addition to Muslim Juma Golden Mosque in mass is held in honor of Black Jesus of the Nazarene in Quiapo Church, located just a few hundred metres from the mosque. Therefore, motorists do not recommend to come to this area on the last working day of the week.
Once Islam was the most common religion in the Philippines until in 1570 Miguel Lopez de Legazpi overthrew the Muslim Sultan Raja Suleiman and declared Manila as the capital of the Spanish colony. Today only Golden Mosque is reminiscent of past dominance of Islam in the Philippine Islands.
