At the corner of streets of Escolta and William Burke street in Manila Santa Cruz rises a magnificent house in the neoclassical style of the Regina building, built in 1934. Its architect was the son of Juan Luna, Andres Luna de San Pedro. The building is surrounded on all sides by streams, and flows right behind him Estero de La Reina – perhaps the name of this Creek the building got its name.
Regina building was originally built as a commercial building. Since 1934 it housed one of the first Philippine insurance companies – Provident Insurance Corporation". Later the building was bought by the De Leon family, which built the fourth floor and had a small reconstruction under the leadership of Fernando Ocampo, a pioneer of Philippine modern architecture.
Despite the change of owner, the building continued to be commercial – it still housed the offices of insurance companies, as the Santa Cruz was in those years the main financial center of Manila. Today, here are the offices of freight forwarding companies.
They say that Regina building was one of the first buildings in the Philippines, built of concrete – this technology on the island is subject to frequent earthquakes, introduced by the Americans. From America was born and distinctive architectural style, which made the building, is a mixture of neoclassical and art Deco. In the same style in Manila built Central Post Office, national Museum and the Department of Finance and Tourism.
