The Coconut Palace Photo: Coconut Palace

The coconut Palace, also known as Tahanang Filipino, which means "Philippine House is the official residence and principal workplace of the Vice President. It is located in the Cultural center of the Philippines in the Manila suburb of Pasay. Its construction was timed to the visit to the country of Pope John Paul II in 1981. However, the head of the Catholic world have abandoned the residence, saying that it would be too pretentious to stay in the Palace, while the majority of the inhabitants of the Philippines are mired in poverty. Later the architect Francisco de Manose stated that the construction of the Coconut Palace was planned long before the decision of the Pope to visit the country.

The coconut Palace was built in 1978 of several types of Philippine hardwood, coconut shell and specially designed coconut lumber. Each of the seven guest rooms on the second floor is named in honor of any of the Philippine region and contains several handmade items produced in the region. For example, in the bathroom Pampanga you can see the statue, made of lahars – debris flow from mount Pinatubo. Bathroom Marawi is a Muslim island of Mindanao, and in the room of Mountain Province contains artifacts of local aborigines. Before becoming the official residence of the Vice President, the Palace was known as a venue for wedding ceremonies.

The Palace building has the shape of an octagon, and the roof is made in the form of traditional Filipino hat "salakot". A distinctive feature of the interior decoration of the Palace are the chandelier, 101 made of coconut shell, and dining table, made of 40 thousands of tiny inlaid pieces of shell. Today, the Coconut Palace is one of the most amazing buildings of the Cultural Center of the Philippines because of its architecture and interiors. And its name reflects the opinion of Filipinos that coconut is a true "tree of life". In design, form and decorations of the Palace are all elements of coconut – from the roots to the trunk, bark, fruit, flowers and shells. In this building in different years stopped the President of Libya Muammar Gaddafi, Hollywood actress Brooke shields, and the American actor and Director George Hamilton.
