The Manila Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral – Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, is an outstanding work of architecture, Catholic Church located in Manila, the site of the old Intramuros. The first Cathedral was built in 1581, and the current – sixth in 1958. In 1981, he was consecrated as a "minor Basilica". Today it is the residence of the Archbishop of the Philippine cardinal Gaudêncio Rosales.

The first Cathedral was built here in 1581 from bamboo and palm wood, was seriously damaged during a Typhoon in 1582, and was finally destroyed in fire. Ten years later, on its place was built a stone Church, which stood until 1600 and collapsed during the earthquake. The third Cathedral was started in 1614 – the construction consisted of three naves and seven chapels. It also suffered from the earthquake in 1645. From 1654 to 1671 years on the territory of Intramuros built majestic fourth Cathedral, which stood for nearly two centuries, and in 1863 was seriously damaged by another earthquake. In 1880 collapsed bell tower, and until 1959 the Cathedral without it. The fifth Catholic Church was built from 1870 to 1879 the years – cross over the main dome served as a guide in determining the astronomical longitude. However, during the bombing of the city in 1945, the Cathedral was almost completely destroyed. Only in 1954 began the erection of another sixth of the Cathedral, the construction lasted until 1958.

The main facade of the Manila Cathedral is decorated with sculptures of famous saints in white Italian limestone. Inside the Cathedral are buried two of Philippine President Carlos Garcia and Corazon fee. The last one died in 2009 and became the first woman whose body was exposed in the Cathedral to bid farewell. Under the Protocol, only Filipino Archbishop may qualify for such an honor.
