In 1700-1710 years on the territory of the Upper town in Minsk was built a Catholic Church at the Jesuit monastery. The Cathedral was a model of the Vilna Baroque, its interiors were decorated with rich frescoes and figures of the 12 apostles, carved in wood. Jesuit Church long remained the tallest building in Minsk. Due to the fact that in 1773 Pope Clement XIV dissolved the Jesuit order, in 1798 created the Minsk diocese Catholic district administered by the Bishop, the Church received the status of Cathedral, consecrated in honor of the name of the blessed virgin Mary.
The temple in different years was visited by such famous historical figures as Peter the great, Charles XII of Sweden, Hetman Mazepa, Marshal of France Davout, Decembrist Nikita Muraviev, the Emperor Nicholas II.
During WWII, the Cathedral was badly damaged, in 1951 it was closed in order to change its appearance beyond recognition - two Cathedral towers were destroyed, while the main facade was rebuilt, adapting the building for accommodation for the athletes of the sports society "Spartak".
By 2000, the Cathedral has not only restored its original appearance, but was returned to believers. Today Archcathedral Holy Name of the blessed virgin Mary is the main Catholic Church in Minsk.
