State Museum of art of the peoples of the East, located in the center of Moscow, has the largest collection (more than 147 thousand exhibits) of works of art Far and Middle East, Buryatia, Chukotka, Caucasus, Transcaucasia, Middle Asia and Kazakhstan. It also houses a large collection of paintings by N. K. Roerich and S. N. Roerich.

The Oriental Museum is the only House Luninyh" on Nikitsky Boulevard. This former estate of Lieutenant-General P. M. Lunin, a monument of architecture built in the early 19th century. The author of the project of the building is considered to be the architect D. Gilardi. The main facade of the building is decorated with a loggia with Corinthian columns and moldings. The manor ensemble is a fine example of construction of Moscow of that time.

Created by the Museum on 30 October 1918. The Museum does not only exhibit, but also cultural, educational and scientific activities. In 1991 the decree of the President of Russia, the Museum was ranked as "most valuable objects of cultural heritage of Russia".

In the Museum are works from different fields of art, trends and genres. There are works of sculpture, painting, graphics, decorative and applied art. In the collections of the Museum are shown works of art of Japan, China, Mongolia, Iran, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, India, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia. Are unique examples of ancient and medieval sculptures, scroll paintings, textiles and jewelry. A special place in the exposition of the Museum is the collection of works by outstanding artists, thinkers, educators and scientists Nicholas and Svetoslav Roerich.

The Museum has permanent exhibitions: "Art of China", "Japanese Art", "Art of Southeast Asia", "Art of Korea", "Art of Iran", "the Art of Central Asia and Kazakhstan", "Art of India", "the Art of Buryatia, Mongolia and Tibet", "Painting of Transcaucasia and Central Asia", "art of the peoples of the North" and "Creativity N. K. and S. N. Roerich". Along with the permanent exhibition in the premises of the Oriental Museum regularly hosts exhibitions of Russian and foreign artists.
