Memorial hall in memory of the victims of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki was opened in 2002 near the atomic bomb Museum and Peace Park.
The atomic attacks on Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki are the only historical facts of combat use of nuclear weapons. The bombings were committed by pilots of the U.S. air force 6 and 9 August 1945. On Nagasaki on the morning of 9 August the bomb was dropped "Fat man". The purpose of these strikes was to accelerate Japan's surrender in world war II. When choosing cities as targets were also considered Kyoto, Yokohama, Kokura and Niigata – largest port, industrial city centers or military industry and location military warehouses.
Japan capitulated on 15 August, a week after Hiroshima and Nagasaki died from 150 to 250 thousand people. The act of surrender was signed on September 2.
Hall of memory in Nagasaki was built as a place for praying for the dead from the explosion of the atomic bomb, and also as a reminder of what terrible threat to humanity posed by nuclear weapons. The memorial also participates in international exchange and dissemination of information in the field of treating people affected by nuclear radiation.
The memorial was built by the architect Akira Smoke in just two years – the work was carried out from November 2000 to December 2002 In a ground floor meeting room, in front of which on the monitors show pictures of the many victims of the tragedy. In the hall of memory with 12 pillars, which symbolize the hope for peace.
Documents and evidence about the bombing from the collections of the memorial hall are exhibited in other museums around the world. In 60-th anniversary of the bombing in 2005 the exhibition was held at the peace Museum, Chicago. And in 2007, the exhibition saw the inhabitants of the Spanish town of Guernica, which was destroyed by Nazi air strikes in 1937.
