The our lady of the rosary Church and national Shrine of St. Elizabeth Seton Photo: our lady of the rosary Church and national Shrine of St. Elizabeth Seton

Catholic Church our lady of the rosary draws the attention of everyone who appears in front of the entrance to the pier, where ferries leave for Staton island. Directly opposite the entrance is a small red brick building in the Federal style with a cross on the bell tower, connecting with the same small house with unusual architecture.

They even look like one, although the left side was built in 1964 – its extremely well stylized under "neighbor", built in 1793. This ancient building to the right is the former home of Senator James Watson, presumably designed by John McComb Jr. Low mansion of red brick with white columns and a balustrade on the roof looks very original thanks to an unexpected corner alcove with two storeys in height.

Small complex sharing a our lady of the rosary Church and national Shrine of St. Elizabeth Seton, the first American canonized by the Vatican. Raised in the Episcopal Church, Elizabeth is a young fun beauty – married businessman William Seton. They had five children, when in 1802 William went bankrupt and suffered from tuberculosis. Doctors recommended him a warm climate, Cetoni sold everything they had, and my older daughter went to Italy, where William died. For some time Elizabeth lived with the child in the Catholic families of the Italian partners of William. Their deep faith and warm part made Elizabeth the impression that upon his return to America she joined the Roman Catholic Church.

Before Elizabeth was the problem of the spiritual education of children, and she realized that this same problem is faced by all parents. Not without difficulties (financial, associated with anti-Catholic sentiment in the society) in 1809 Elizabeth Seton founded in Emmitsburg Academy St. Joseph's, women's religious community of the sisters of mercy dedicated to the education of poor children, and free Catholic school. It marked the beginning of Catholic parish schools in the United States. Herself as a community leader has since called "mother Seton". So the girl who loved to play music, ride horses and dreamed of a happy family life, turned into a wise mother superior who has learned to live in poverty, to work hard and to overcome persistent difficulties.

The Holy see was canonized mother Seton in 1975. Here in new York, dedicated to her national Shrine (special Roman Catholic Church) stands on the very spot where once was with William the house in which started out her adult life. The Church of our lady of the rosary is named in honor of the mission of our lady of the rosary, founded in 1883 and located in the same building. The mission had no relation to the Saint Elizabeth Seton, but acted in the same spirit of charity – she has helped hundred of thousands of Irish girls who arrived in the U.S., to find housing and work and reconnect with family.
