Amazing cave Church of Panagia Chrysopolitissa, located in the village of Kato Deftera, which is only 11 kilometers South-West of Nicosia, is considered one of the most ancient temples of the island. Some historians believe that in the bronze age the people in this place was praying one of the pagan goddesses of fertility.

The Church, however, which is also called the Holy Church of our lady of the Golden Cave, was based, as is clear from its name, in honor of the virgin. According to one legend, once upon a time, local residents discovered cave in the rock, in which twinkled a fire. When they went inside, they found a surprising two-sided icon of the virgin Mary. After that they built in the place of the temple. However, it is not known exactly when and by whom it was created.

Later unique icon was transferred to the Church of St. Nicholas, which stands in the centre of Paphos, where it is stored until now. But every year in August, on the feast of the assumption, it solemnly brought to the cave temple of Panagia Chrysopolitissa. At the same time in the village religious fair is held.

The Church itself consists of three small rooms carved into the rock. Between these areas are connected by narrow corridors. Scientists believe that earlier this place was a monastery. Now to the entrance of the caves, which are located high enough above the ground, for the convenience of visitors was a fortified stairway.

Currently this Church is very popular among young girls who come to the cave temple to pray to the virgin and ask her for a happy marriage and healthy children.
