Cathedral of the Transfiguration is the oldest Orthodox Cathedral in the city of Novokuznetsk. The temple is situated on the high Bank of the river Tom.
Stone building of the Cathedral was laid in 1792 and was a two-storey Church with three altars. In 1801, a solemn consecration of the first floor, with the altar in honor of St. John the Baptist and St. Nicholas. Due to the lack of money lower floor was temporarily blocked with boards, the way it stood until 1822, and after construction resumed. Construction work ended in 1830, finishing work and painting continued until 1835 In 1832-1833, the Cathedral was surrounded by a stone wall with two gates. The ceremony of the consecration of the Church took place in August 1835, the icons for the iconostasis were painted in Turinsk in 1833, and the icon of the miracle worker in Moscow in 1836
For many years the construction of the Cathedral reflected in his appearance. A feature of the temple consisted in the abundance of Baroque cupolas. The architectural style of the Cathedral on the strict proportions of the volumes has embodied the style of classicism with some fragments of late "Siberian Baroque". In December 1837, the bell tower of the Church was raised to the bell, and in 1839 the altar made of cast-iron floor. In 1907, the Cathedral was renovated, as it is greatly decayed, especially after several earthquakes.
In December 1919, during anticachectic the presentations, the Cathedral was set on fire. In 1926 the congregation resulted in the order of the first floor of the Church, after which services were resumed. In 1929 the Church was closed in his room placed a geological Museum, and after - school combiners and bakery. In the 1960s, the city authorities had planned to do a restaurant here. And only in 1989 the city Council decided to transfer the Church to the Orthodox community. In 1991, in a renovated building of the Cathedral held its first service.
