Adam's Peak Photo: Adam's Peak

Located in a picturesque area on the South of the mountainous part of the island, the mountain stirred the imagination of many over the centuries. As soon as its not called Adam's peak (the place where Adam first set foot on earth after he was kicked out of heaven), Sri Pada (sacred footprint, left by the Buddha, when he went to heaven) or Semanalmente (mountain butterflies where butterflies die). Some think that a huge "footprint" on the top of the peak (2243 m) is that of St. Thomas the Apostle of India, or even Shiva.

In whichever of legends, people did not believe, but this place was a centre of pilgrimage for over 1000 years. King Parakramabahu and king of Polonnaruwa Nissanka Malla arranged on mount ambalama (a place to rest weary pilgrims). In our time, the influx of pilgrims begins in a day "Singing" in December and lasts until the feast of "Vesak" in may. The busiest period is in January and February. The rest of the temple at the top is not used, and may to October is the peak most of the time hidden under the clouds.

During the season of pilgrimage constant stream of pilgrims and tourists rises to the top of the countless stairs. They come from a small settlement in Dalhousie (del), 33 km South-West from the town of Hatton. In the season the road is lit by lights that look very nice, like a snake going up the hill. You can also hike to the peak and out of season, but then you have to use a flashlight. Many pilgrims prefer to make a longer, much more tiring - but equally well laid - seven-hour ascent from Ratnapura by Carney, as this is considered more merit.

From the summit of Adam's peak to watch the sunrise, which is quite breath taking. As soon as the first rays of dawn light up on the mountain, gaze has stunning views – purple Orb appears in the distance, lighting the tops of the nearby mountains and rises above the clouds. Colombo is 65 km from the peak of Adam, and it is well seen on a clear day.
