The bridge, the harbour bridge is one of the most beautiful sights of Auckland. It connects the two shores - Saint MERIS Bay and Northcote (downtown North) across the Bay***. Its construction lasted 5 years - from 1954 to 1959. The bridge is 1150 metres, making it the second longest bridge in New Zealand. The main span of the bridge is 244 meters from column to column, height is up to 43 meters.

The bridge was built after the Second world war, when Oakland began to grow rapidly in a northerly direction. Then was founded the bridge project, which in addition to the pedestrian part consisted of six car lanes. However, the cost of the project was confused by the city authorities and it was decided to reduce the width of the bridge to four lanes. From the pedestrian area had to completely give up. Developed the project company Freeman Fox & Partners, the contractor building company Cleveland Bridge Co. Part of the design of the bridge was assembled on the Bank, then by barges transported to the portion of the bridge. The construction did not stop even in bad weather.

10 years after the opening of the traffic bridge in both directions, grew so much that in 1969 it was decided to increase it by adding two lanes in each direction. After a few years the integrity of the design was compromised due to the extra load on the completed lane. Cracks that have been liquidated, and in 2007, the movement of trucks on the bridge was prohibited.

Now in rush hour traffic on the bridge is carried out by reversing the movement. The band is allocated under different directions depending on traffic, distancing itself portable chipper. Today the bridge or pass through more than 170,000 vehicles per day.
