In Olomouc you can find a completely different fountains and modern, created with the latest technology, illuminated by bright lights, and charm, created in a cubic or a minimalist style, which are strange pillars, standing in the middle of the lawn. However, the most valuable fountains, which are considered the property of the Czech Republic, are 6 structures created in the XVII-XVIII centuries. They are named after Roman deities. To this group belongs the Neptune fountain – the oldest fountain in Olomouc. It was established in 1683 by the efforts of two talented people – Michael Mandika and Vaclav Schüller. They divided the work on the fountain. Cutter M. Mandica belongs to the statue of the sea God Neptune, and V. schüller engaged in the development of the water tank and stairs leading to it. Neptune sends his Trident down, urging the horses from their mouths which flow streams of water. Just below the Trident, you can see the signature of M. Mandica.
Sculptor M. Mandic was in Olomouc in the late 60-ies of the XVII century and entered the service of the local Bishop, which was connected to his work in his own residence in kroměříž. I must say, some outstanding works of art during this period M. Mandic not created. Nevertheless, he was able to get the order of the local authorities for the construction of several churches and two fountains.
The Baroque Neptune fountain decorates the area in Rivendell. Already in the XX century during the reconstruction of the fountain beneath it were found the remains of an ancient chapel, dedicated to the name of St. Margaret. The financing of the construction of the chapel in 1417 was carried out by the local merchants Guild. The flow of funds for its construction had stopped, unfinished chapel some time stood in the square, corns all eyes and preventing the movement, therefore, in 1520, the city decided to demolish it. And now only the Neptune fountain is reminiscent of modern tourists that once there was a temple.
