Old town hall Photo: Old city hall

The main area of the Ostrava bears the name of T. Masaryk – the first President of Czechoslovakia. One of the most beautiful and presentable buildings in the square is the Old town hall, which has served the "fathers" of the city until 1930. Then built a New city hall, and the old one was closed, and after all was given to the Museum.

The building, decorated with a low turret, immediately attracts attention, it was built before 1539, when the town hall was first mentioned in written documents. Originally the hall was decorated with the round tower. Between 1737 and 1780 was reconstructed as a result of which the tower was completely rebuilt. Now she has acquired a square shape and was decorated for hours. The facade of the town hall was rebuilt in the Baroque style. However, in this form, the building didn't last for long. He was expecting another large-scale reconstruction, which occurred in the years 1831-1837. Two years earlier, during a thunderstorm in the tower was struck by lightning. The townspeople decided that the walls would not stand such a blow, and the tower will simply crumble. However, the structure broke down and waited for the next alteration. Now hall acquired an Empire features. In 1859 was configured second floor of the town hall, which was immediately occupied by different offices.

The last major restructuring occurred in the years 1874-1875, when the facade of the town hall was upgraded and gave it a Renaissance look. It is this we see the Old town hall of the city of Ostrava, which now houses the Museum of local lore. He has a vast collection of various ancient artifacts found during archaeological excavations.
