Many European, including Czech, the city is decorated with columns, called Plague pillars. Put them in the place of honor, usually in the Central square of the city, as thanks to the Lord that the plague had passed and spared many residents.
In Ostrava this Plague column stands in front of Old town hall on Masaryk square. It is made of Sandstone, crowned by a statue of the virgin Mary, made in Baroque style. Building the Marian column worked famous master I. G. Selander. Date created columns known – 1702. The sculpture on the column corrected, improved and altered in 1773. At the time, the repair of the statue was entrusted to the sculptor Mateus to Zidek.
Locals believe that the blessed virgin is in Masaryk square protects their town from the evils and miseries. It bowed in silent mourning his head crowned with a halo, in which there are 12 gold plated stars. Column also decorated with four vases, three of which are original, created in the XVIII century. The fourth crashed, so it had to be replaced with a copy that its appearance does not differ from the original vases.
The fate of Ostrava-Mariánské post difficult. In 1960, the city authorities decided that the period of epidemics of plague has come and gone, and the place occupied by the post on the main city square, can be used for other purposes. Instead of grieving Madonna here put a sculpture dedicated to the events of 1948. The townspeople, of course, were unhappy that their old town disfigure modern sculptures, but no one asked.
Mariana the column was rebuilt in the same place only in 1992.
