As often happens, great discoveries are made by accident. So, in 1961 in Paphos, a short distance from the harbour, one of the local farmers, spahija field, discovered an amazing thing – the remains of the unique structures of the Roman Empire. Soon this place was the creation of the archaeological Park, which now attracts lovers of antiquities from around the world. At the moment for tourists opened three of the four main detected buildings are houses which belonged to the noble Romans, built around the third century of our era. They were named villas of Dionysos, Aion and Theseus. The names of these ruins have been miraculously preserved thanks to the mosaics that decorated the floors and almost completely destroyed the walls of these buildings. Each mosaic depicts scenes from the life of one of the gods or heroes of ancient times. Beautiful patterns are constructed from small glass, stone and marble tiles of different colors.

So, the biggest interest is the house of Dionysus is almost 556 square metres of beautifully preserved mosaic designs which you can see scenes from ancient myths about the God of wine Dionysus, and images made drunk with the wine of people. Otherwise mosaics are not as impressive scale and not as well preserved, but also quite interesting. For example, you should pay special attention to the scene of the battle of Theseus with the Minotaur in the house of Theseus and the image of the birth of Dionysus Villa Iona.

Mosaics are considered to be one of the main attractions of Paphos, in addition, they were included in the UNESCO world cultural heritage site by UNESCO.
