National Eugene Delacroix Museum occupies the apartment where the artist lived the last years of his life, and his Studio located in the garden adjacent to the house. The artist moved here in 1867 that no interference working on the mural located near the Church of Saint-Sulpice. He was seriously ill and wanted to have time to complete the work on the frescoes.
Delacroix lived a stormy and eventful life. It was believed that he was the illegitimate son of Napoleon's foreign Minister Talleyrand. The boy's parents died early, at sixteen, the young man was left to himself. Thinking about his future, he chose the painting, and in ten years achieved fame in this field, putting the painting "the Massacre of Chios". After the July uprising of 1830, he wrote the famous "Liberty leading the people" painting caused a furor, the government bought it, but was immediately ordered to remove from public view. In Russia the painting known as "Freedom on barricades". It is now exhibited in the Louvre.
Then there were the years of wandering in the Maghreb countries. On his return to France – the official orders for the Bourbon and the Luxembourg palaces of the Louvre. The last twelve years of his life Delacroix has devoted to the Church of Saint-Sulpice, where he painted in the encaustic technique huge fresco "the Battle of Jacob with the angel", "Saint Michael slaying the demon" and "Exile robber of Heliodorus from the temple in Jerusalem". Delacroix very saddened that these works remained virtually unnoticed.
Eugène Delacroix died in 1863 in his home. And flat, workshop and passed into private hands. In 1929 the house was going to be demolished to build Parking garages. The rescue Committee of the monument was led by the artists Maurice Denis and Paul Signac. As a result, the Studio of Delacroix was declared a monument of national culture. Today we can see the authentic easel master, two wooden drawing table, sketches, drawings and engravings, narrow bed, where the artist spent the last hours of life.
Connoisseurs of the artist's work can also be seen in the Luxembourg gardens plastic and expressive monument to Delacroix the sculptor aimé-Jules Dala. The monument was erected here in 1890.
