The Fountain Saint-Sulpice Photo: The Fountain Saint-Sulpice

Saint-Sulpice, one of the most beautiful Parisian fountains, ordered Claude-Philibert Rambut, prefect of the Seine. The prefect, who took office in 1833, pushed through an ambitious program to improve the water supply of the city. He built 200 miles of new conduit and, equally important, 1700 small drinking fountains all over Paris. Monumental fountains such as Saint-Sulpice, – they were installed just for looks.

Saint-Sulpice really good – twelve-height stone structure in the Renaissance style with waterfalls and decorations. The architect Louis Visconti put three octagonal swimming pools on different levels. On the second level of roaring lions from the coat of arms of Paris, and the third bowl with attached masks; from open mouths water flows. At the top of an impressive rectangular-shaped top with a dome, Corinthian pilasters and niches, containing statues of the four bishops of the work of different sculptors – Jean-Jacques Fesch, Francois Lanno, Louis despre and Jacques-Auguste Vagina.

As usual, the fountain immediately began to criticize: he supposedly visually blocks the entrance to the Church of Saint-Sulpice, bowls similar to utensils, and the lions roar from irritation due to the fact that water flows from behind. In addition, the fountain, clearly oriented to the four cardinal points, were called "fontaine des quatre points cardinaux". Literally it means "fountain of the four directions", but "points cardinaux" can be pronounced very similar to "pas cardinaux" – "cardinals". The irony witty Parisians meant that none of these bishops did not become a cardinal.

However, Louis Visconti put statues of bishops not because their ranks. Jacques bossue, françois fénelon, Esprit Flechier and Jean-Baptiste Massillon were truly outstanding preachers, theologians, and writers of his time. Sometimes they were arguing with each other, as bosua and his student fénelon, always with the Protestants, but their disputes were sanctified by the love of God and man. In their sermons they've focused on moral rather than doctrinal issues, addressed not only to the mind but to the heart.

The fountain survived the revolutionary turmoil, and four great Bishop is still looking out of his niches as a reminder that preaching is the duty of every Christian.
