The fountain of Neptune is one of the fountains of the Palace and Park ensemble "Peterhof". In 1736 in the main basin of the Upper Park was placed a sculpture-fountain composition "Neptune's Wagon". The sculptures were made of lead and gold. In the center of the composition was placed the figure of Neptune with a stroller, also "riders" on horses and dolphins. Gilt copper ball up the Central fountain jet. After multiple restorations "Neptune's Wagon" in 1797, was charged. Instead, a new ensemble – "Neptune", and continuing in the present.
Originally the fountain figures were created in the German city of Nuremberg. In 1660 by sculptor Georg Schweiger and zolotorudnom christovam Ritter was a model consisting only of the constituent parts. After Schweiger, together with his disciple Jeremiah by Isler worked on the model to 1670, but the complete collection of figures was performed only in 1688-1694. The casting was engaged in Heroldt. The fountain has never been exhibited in Nuremberg, but despite this, he became known as a specific attraction, even staying in the warehouse.
In 1796 most of the figures was obtained by Russia and transported to Peterhof. Copy, currently set in the Nuremberg city Park, located there since 1902.
The citizens of Nuremberg, ordering a fountain, wished to perpetuate the memory of the Westphalian world, which was the completion of difficult for Germany of the Thirty years war, lasting from 1618 to 1648 years. The composition consisted of 27 pieces and decorative items. On the square of the local market was already built pool with pedestal for installation of the fountain group, when it became clear that for the fountains in urban rivers is simply not enough water. In this regard, the sculptures were dismantled and stacked in the barn. Here they stayed for about a century, until in the 80-ies of the XVIII century, traveling around Europe, Nuremberg't visited the future Russian Emperor Paul. He acquired composition, estimated by the city authorities in the enormous sum of 30,000 rubles.
At first Paul thought to put the sculpture at his residence in Gatchina. But in 1798 it was decided: "Brought from Nuremberg Neptune fountain to put in the Peterhof Lower Park...". But here the fountain installation failed because of insufficient water supply of the basin. Then was followed by another decree by which it was decided to place the sculpture in the Upper Park, in the pool, which was dismantled, Carts Neptunalia". This was done in 1799.
Water scenery "Neptune" was 26 various water jets. The former decoration of the fountains were left only dolphins and two lead garlands of oak leaves, flowers and shells.
The figure of Neptune in the middle of a large rectangular pool, the size of which h meters, on a high pedestal of granite, which features 4 bedrooms spouted macaroons. Flat area around the pedestal, laid tuff, bears the figure paired groups of riders on the hippocampi (sea horse with wings), which urges the dolphins. Also the pond is decorated with 8 figures of dolphins from jaws of which can be seen low rising streams of water.
During the great Patriotic war, all fountain sculptures were dismantled and sent to Germany. But very soon, in 1947, the sculpture was taken to Peterhof and installed in the same place. However, running fountain "Neptune" was only in 1956.
