Polonnaruwa is a town in North-Eastern Central Sri Lanka. In 1982 the ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been added to the list of UNESCO world heritage site.

After Pollonaruwa some time was the Royal capital, it, thanks to its convenient location at the crossroads of important transport routes between Colombo and Batticaloa, turned into a medium-sized city and became famous due to its ancient city. In addition, there were fewer mosquitoes. When the Sinhala king Vijayabahu I drove the Chola from the island in 1070, he left the capital to Polonnaruwa.

Under king Parakramabahu I (1153-1186.), Polonnaruwa reached its peak of prosperity. The king has erected huge buildings, beautiful parks, and the crown of progress is spread over 2500 hectares of the irrigation system, which was so great that it was named named the Sea of Parakrama.

After Parakramabahu I came to power Nissanka-Malla (1187-1196.), which almost bankrupted the Kingdom with his attempts to match the achievements of their predecessors. By the early 13th century, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura and became vulnerable to invasions from southern India and in the end she too was abandoned, and the capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom was moved to the West of the island.
