Memorable sign "Polotsk – the geographical centre of Europe" was set during the celebration of the city of Polotsk may 31, 2008. During the solemn opening of a memorial plaque to the mayor Vladimir of Polotsk Winepress was awarded a certificate with the exact calculations of the coordinates of the geographical center of Europe. The authorship of the monument belongs to the architect Ivan Borovik and sculptor Alexander Prokhorov.

To set where the center of Europe, managed to scientist surveyors of the Republican unitary enterprise of aerospace methods in geodesy "Belaeronavigatsia". To make exact calculations have allowed modern methods for aerospace survey and powerful computers. In the calculations of the Belarusian surveyors Europe was taken as a whole, along with the White and Baltic seas, and Islands located near the coast. The performed calculations allowed us to know the exact coordinates of the center of Europe: 55 degrees 30 minutes North latitude and 28 degrees 48 minutes East longitude.

To the greatest joy and amazement Belarusian cartographers place it was in the most beautiful square of the ancient city of Polotsk, which allowed to establish a memorial sign showing where the center of Europe. Earlier specialists from other countries were produced by calculating the center of Europe. They were in other places. However, only the calculations Belarusian colleagues have been confirmed by scientists of the Central research Institute of geodesy, aerial photography and cartography from Moscow.

On the memorable sign symbolized the Northern hemisphere is indicated by the arcs of the Meridian, on which stands a symbol of Polotsk – the Golden boat. Four arrows indicate the direction of light. In the center of the sign shows a map of Europe and its geographic center in Polotsk.
