The Citadel Park is the largest city Park in Poznan area of about 100 hectares, was built in 1963-1970, and the former Fort Warka, as well as to the North of the city centre. In 2008, the Park was declared a historical monument.
Fort Warka, as well as in the mid-19th century was considered one of the largest defensive FORTS in Europe. In the postwar period, the Fort was converted into the Park of the Ciutadella. In the Park, the military Museum, war cemetery, some of the surviving fortifications. The Park begins with a sweeping staircase, on top of which is a monument to the heroes of the red Army. Main Park alleys have names: Alley republics, Alley Citadella and Avenue of the military brotherhood. In addition to alleys, in the Park there is a large number of footpaths, drowning in the shade of many trees: maples, pear trees, oaks. The oldest tree is over a hundred years.
On the slope in the southwestern part of the Park are the cemeteries. Here is an Old garrison cemetery, established after the First world war, where prisoners of war are buried. Also, here are: the parish cemetery of St. Adalbert, Soviet military cemetery, the burial place of nearly 6,000 soldiers, British and German cemeteries.
In the Park of the Citadel are two military Museum. Not far from the Museum of arms is a sculptural composition "Unidentified", authored by Polish sculptor Magdalena o'keeffe. The sculpture consists of 112 iron pieces that move in different directions without a clear purpose. The sculptures symbolize the situation of human rights in the contemporary world. The Grand opening of the composition took place in the Park of the Citadel 19 October 2002.
