Navigable lake Titicaca, situated at an altitude of 3 856 metres above sea level, with an area of 8 370 sq km and a depth of 280 m, is shared by Peru and Bolivia. Its coasts and small Islands, such as Amantani and taquile, are home to indigenous tribes Aymara and Quechua people, whose ancestors lived in these places long before the Incas. The bulk of the inhabitants of the shores of lake Titicaca live in traditional Indian villages where Spanish is not considered a major, and ancient myths and beliefs persist today.
On the shores of lake Titicaca to the South-East plateau Callao, is a beautiful city of Puno, founded in 1666 by the Spaniards under the name of Villa Rica de San Carlos de Puno, also known as the "folkloric capital of Peru". 14 km from the town of Puno, on the shores of lake grows massively giant totora reeds, ethnic group of Uru Indians lives on a makeshift floating Islands. Their ancestors many centuries ago, called themselves "people of the black blood", were forced to flee to the lake because of the persecution of the ruler of the Empire of the Inca Pachacutec. To date, 3,000 Indians ur 40 floating Islands with a population of 200-300 people, and the rest moved to land. These people are mostly engaged in fishing and hunting for waterfowl, create new floating Islands, build on them at home, pass on their beliefs and customs from generation to generation.
On the shores of lake Titicaca, you can see vicuña, Alpaca, llama, Guinea pig, Fox, diving duck, Andean cat and flamingos. Its a little salty waters are rich in fish, including several species of carp, trout and catfish. You can also see a giant frog, known as tictacti Whistler, and is the only habitat of this species.
Lake flora are 12 varieties of aquatic plants, including California totora reeds, green algae Chara and several species of duckweed.
The average annual temperature of 13° C, with large temperature fluctuations due to the high altitude. Precipitation increases in the southern summer (December to March), which this time of year the coast is threatened by flooding and frequent storm.
