Since the 18th century this land in the Pskov region was known as Michael Bay. She was part of other land holdings of the Royal family. The village of Mikhailovskoye at the time was called the Mouth. The estate was founded in 1742. During this period, the Empress Elizabeth Petrovna granted land to Abram Petrovich Gannibal, who was a soldier and statesman at the court of Peter the Great, his godson and great-grandfather of Alexander Pushkin. Abram Petrovich died in 1781. The estate was inherited by his son, the father of the mother of Alexander. Already Osip Abramovich, the son of Abram Petrovich, the estate was ennobled. Under him it was first built, was a Park. He called him Michael. It is assumed that the name of the estate derives from the name of the Mikhailovsky monastery, which was located nearby.
Since 1806 after the death of Osip Abramovich some time the owner of the manor was his wife, Maria Alekseevna, descendant of Pushkin. In 1818, the inheritance passed to Nadezhda Osipovna, the poet's mother. In 1836 her children – Olga, Leo and Alexander, were the legitimate successors of St. Michael. A. S. Pushkin loved to come to Michael, this was the place of his seclusion, experiences and creative inspiration. After the poet's death in 1837, the estate was inherited by his children, Alexander, Maria and Natalia.
In 1866, the mansion became the residence Grigory Pushkin. He prudently took up the restoration of the family seat, which till that time quite dilapidated. Parents of A. S. Pushkin is practically involved in the repair of the manor, came to rest in the summer. In a time when Pushkin was in exile in St. Michael, house and other buildings were very old and needed repair. Grigory had to completely rebuild the manor, break dilapidated buildings.
In 1899 the state Treasury bought back the family estate of A. S. Pushkin. The estate of Mikhailovskoye from that time was under the jurisdiction of the Pskov nobility. Since 1911 there was a colony for older writers. In 1908 and 1918 in St. Michael had severe fires. In 1921, the farm was restored.
In 1922, at the family estate of the poet finally opened a Museum, and St. Michael received the status of the Museum-reserve of A. S. Pushkin. His territory included the building of the house of the poet, which is the main exposition, the house of the nanny Arina of Rodionovna, garden with fruit trees and a Park. In a residential area of the mansion was recreated atmosphere, which corresponds to the time when he lived Pushkin.
The estate has a simple and convenient layout. In the center, on the hill is the house owners. During the poet's lifetime there were lilacs, Jasmine and yellow acacia. Later the circle was planted with lime trees, and in the center of the circle – elm.
At the sides of the manor house were built utility and service rooms. On the left is the house Babysitting. Further behind him is a cellar, the walls of which in the morning loved to shoot A. S. Pushkin. Following the cellar building – barn, covered with a thatched roof. To the right are two wings that house the Manager and the clerk. Behind them is a fruit garden. The house itself, which stands at the edge of the hill, was quite modest compared with the houses of other nobles. He was of small size, simple architecture.
In 1949 it was decided to restore all the buildings as they were during the life of A. S. Pushkin. Based on the documents of the time – lithographs, drawings, plans, etc. Greatly facilitate the work, when the house was rebuilt by Gregory Alexandrovich, was left untouched the Foundation, which was originally founded during construction.
