Rimondi Fountain Photo: The Fountain Rimondi

In the heart of the old town of Rethymno on the Platanos square is the famous Rimondi fountain, which for the past four centuries offers weary passers-by a drink of fresh water.

The Rimondi fountain was built in 1626 by the Venetian Governor of the city A. Rimondi to provide residents with drinking water. Presumably, on this place there was an older fountain 1588 year built, and the Governor began its reconstruction. In the Venetian period in many cities of Crete was felt acute shortage of water. For most practical needs residents used rainwater collected in special containers and constructed wells. Thus water from the city fountains provide for the needs of the population in drinking water. In Rethymno there are seven fountains in different parts of the city, four of which were built by the Turks.

The facade of the fountain is an architrave with four fluted Corinthian columns, standing on a small hill above the three basins where water flows. Pools were used as a feeder for animals. Holes, from which water flows, in the form of a lion's head, embedded in the marble wall. The architrave is decorated with a Latin inscription of two words "Liberalitatis" and "Fontes". Between the middle columns in marble carved graceful arms of the kind Rimondi. After the capture of the city by the Turks in 1646, the fountain was surrounded by a wall and completed the dome. However, these innovations did not survive. They may have destroyed themselves or deliberately destroyed by the locals.

According to a beautiful legend, love, the one who drinks from this fountain will definitely get married.
