The most ancient building of the Pantheon - temple of all the gods, was erected in 27 year BC Marcus Agrippa. Between 118-128 ad the Church was thoroughly rebuilt by the Emperor Hadrian and acquired the form it holds today.
The inscription on the architrave reads: "Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, Consul for the Third, did." Her left Adrian who did not put his name on any of the monuments. The reconstruction project of Apollodorus Damascus, significantly altered the original appearance of the building. Preserved a vast portico, formed by eight columns of gray granite. Two columns of red granite, standing behind the first, third, sixth and eighth column, forming three passes. The tympanum was once decorated with a bronze eagle with a crown. The ceiling of the portico was decorated with bronze, shot by order of Pope urban VIII Barberini, hence the famous expression: "What did the barbarians, the Barberini did". The dome crowning the building is a true masterpiece of engineering art - was created entirely on the wooden formwork and is the widest ever built domes.
Inside the building on the sides there are six niches, each of which is framed by two columns. The dome is decorated with five rows up decreasing the caissons, with the exception of the last row of round holes, the so-called "eye of the Pantheon, with a diameter of 9 meters, through which flows inside the flow of light.
Now Pantheon is a national mausoleum. First his desire to be buried here was expressed by the artist Raphael. Later were buried here other famous personalities, including representatives of the Royal dynasty of Savoy.
