Belém bridge – monument of the Bulgarian architecture, one of the outstanding buildings in the country. The architectural project was Nicola Vichev, who built the bridge during the period from 1865 to 1867, on the initiative of Midhat Pasha. The bridge crosses the Yantra river that flows near the town of Byala, Ruse region.

The length of this ancient arched bridge – 276 meters, and its width is 9 meters. The arches of the bridge are richly decorated with magnificent reliefs depicting animal heads. For manufacturing use only local materials like limestone and gypsum. Vehicular traffic on the bridge is forbidden, for this purpose, near Belém bridge was built a special crossing of the river.

Part of the bridge was destroyed by flood in 1897: were destroyed Central openings with a length of 130 meters each in the amount of 8 pieces. Later, this part of the bridge was restored, but unfortunately, in complete disharmony with the original design – in 1922-1923 arches were reinforced concrete structures.

On the left Bank in front of the Belém do pará bridge you can see the monument to famous architect, on the right Bank is the white monument to the revolutionaries who attempted to cross the river in 1876, but was drowned.
