The first Cathedral on this site was built in the VIII century. Numerous restructuring and fires have resulted in 1598, the Archbishop ordered to erect a new Church by the architect Santino Solari.
The new Cathedral was consecrated in GB and is a benchmark of Baroque art. The facade of the Cathedral is decorated with the figures of two patrons of the city – St. Virgil and St. Rupert, and the figures of two apostles – Peter and Paul. Two 79-metre-high towers flanking the façade of the Cathedral with three bronze doors. The interior of the Cathedral is richly decorated. Preserved bronze baptismal font of the fourteenth century, in which he baptized the little Mozart.
In the Cathedral Museum displays objects from the Treasury of the Cathedral, works of art and rarities.
