The opening of the theatre in 1857 was a major event in the theatrical life of Santiago with the presentation of "Ernani" by Giuseppe Verdi. From then on its stage was a known Opera and ballet artists, such as Luciano Pavarotti and Julio Bocca, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Placido Domingo.

For the last 150 years, the theater survived the earthquake of 1906 with great destruction of the interior of the building and two serious fire. After renovations, the throughput of the theatre was reduced to 1500 people in the main hall. However, its interior is more luxurious.

In 1974, the Municipal theatre of Santiago was declared a national monument of Chile.
