The Museum of modern art an exhibition platform of the faculty of arts of the University of Chile and currently is housed in two buildings: the Museum of modern art forest Park is located to the rear of the National Museum of fine arts Santiago and the Museum of modern art Park QUINTA normal, which is in the building of the Palace of Versailles.
The main goal of the Museum, agreed with the plans of the University, to study the diversity of new trends shaping modern cultural life, to provide the public with new opportunities in the art. In the exposition of the Museum presents approximately 2000 works of Chilean and foreign artists since the late nineteenth century: paintings, drawings, watercolors and sculpture.
The Museum was opened in 1947 in the interaction of the University of Chile and the Institute of fine arts of Santiago. Originally the Museum was located in the building known as the Parthenon Park QUINTA-normal. In 1974, the Museum moved to the Palace of fine arts in forest Park. This building was built in neoclassical style by the architect Emilio Jacquere the centenary of the Republic of Chile. It suffered serious damage from several fires and earthquakes, but after restoration work was again opened its doors, expanding showrooms. The main entrance to the Museum there is a sculpture of the Horse presented to the city by Colombian sculptor Fernando Botero. In 1976 the building was declared a national monument of Chile.
The Palace of Versailles built in 1918 in the French style of the early XX century by the architect Alberto Cruz Montt. Originally a three-storey building with an area of 5400 sq. m. it was planned to give a capacity to the National society of agriculture, but in 1934 it was transferred to the University of Chile for the faculty of agriculture. In the early 70-ies, the building housed the service of the hospital San Juan de Dios. Since 2005 he carried out the restoration of the Museum building in forest Park, it was decided to use the building of the Palace of Versailles for the temporary accommodation of the collections of the Museum of modern art. A year later, after the 2010 earthquake damaged the building of the Palace was restored with funds donated by the German government. Currently it exhibited experimental work by contemporary artists and architects.
