Castle Maness Photo: Castle Maness

Castle Maness is located on the southeastern shore of the island of Unst, Shetland Islands, Scotland. This is the most northerly castle in Britain.

The castle was built in 1598 by Laurence Bruce, brother of Robert Stewart, Earl of Orkney and illegitimate son of king of Scotland James V Lawrence was appointed Sheriff of the Shetland Islands and is famous for bribery and brutality. When after the death of Robert Earl of Orkney was his son Patrick Stewart, Lawrence began to fear that he is removed from office, and began the construction of the castle Maness to protect his family. The work took architect Andrew Crawford, responsible for the construction of the castle of Scalloway owned by just Earl Patrick.

In 1608 Patrick went to the castle Maness with guns and army of 36 people. The castle could be captured, but soon after the siege was raised, and the castle remained unharmed. However, in 1627, the French marauders captured and burned the castle. Probably the castle was restored, but before the end of the seventeenth century it is not lived.

In 1713 castle Maness was loaned to the Dutch East India company for the distribution of the goods rescued from trapped in the wreck of the ship "Lunenburg". In 1718 the clan Bruce sold the castle, but the new owners left it in 1750, and in 1774 the castle remained without a roof.
In the XX century castle ruins Maness were transferred to the state.

Originally the castle consisted of three floors, but only two have survived, and round towers at the edges. The entrance to the castle is from the South-West side, the ground floor housed a huge kitchen and numerous basements. On the second floor was the main hall and living rooms. There are traces of the spiral staircase leading to the now defunct third floor.

To the South-West of the castle there was a courtyard, which housed various facilities, such as bakery, brewery, stables and a chapel. Unfortunately, they are only preserved stone walls.
