The Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky Photo: Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Simferopol today considered one of the most beautiful and grandiose religious buildings of the Crimean capital. It was built by order of Russian Empress Catherine II, who visited Simferopol in 1787. However, due to the impending death of the Queen, the erection of the temple was delayed. It was founded in 1810, but a few years later the building was again frozen due to the outbreak of the Patriotic war of 1812. In 1816, developed a new design for the Cathedral, and with the support of Alexander I and thanks to generous funding from the temple quickly finished. In the Cathedral brought icons and relics bequeathed to another by Empress Catherine.

The temple was built according to the best traditions of the Russian classical school, and it was one of the most monumental buildings in the city. During the existence of the Cathedral was repeatedly modified and rebuilt. The first large-scale reconstruction was carried out in 1844, when the Western façade were attached to the refectory with a bell tower and the porch. In 1869, on the West side Church expanded through the construction of three altars and galleries.

A sad fate awaited the Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky in the early 20th century. In 1918, the revolutionaries used the bell tower and the Church building as a firing point, with the consequence that the Cathedral was badly damaged. Three years later, here has set up a depot of Church utensils, which were brought from all the churches of the Crimea. But the tragic fate of the Cathedral is not ended in 1929 with the bell removed, and a year later the Church was undermined, razed it to the ground. On the site of the Cathedral was divided into square.

The restoration of the temple began in 1999, when the Supreme Council of Crimea adopted a decision on its reconstruction in the same place. Construction work began in 2003. Today, the Church is significantly different from the previous one, but still striking in its beauty and grandeur.
