On the South West coast of the Greek island of Skiathos (approximately 16 km from the capital) is the best beach in the centre of the island – Koukounaries. It is a real Paradise with superb sandy beach and surrounded by beautiful pine forests. This is one of the few places in Greece, where it grows Italian pine stone pine. Actually, hence the place got its name because in Greek "Koukounaries" means "pine".
Until 1964, when the island was designated a National tourist organization of Greece as a promising area for the development of tourism, Skiathos town was the only settlement on the island. Then along the coast was paved good paved road that connects Skiathos and evolving at a rapid pace Koukounaries. On-site Parking between the road and beach area had originally planned to build 9-hole Golf course, but the project was never implemented. Today there is an incredibly beautiful Park with a lake Strofilia connected with the sea by a narrow channel. The Park is recognized as a conservation area and is home to wild animals and birds. This is the perfect place for lovers of long walks.
