Skiathos town is the capital of the eponymous island in the Aegean sea. The town is built amphitheatrically in a picturesque Bay on the Southeast coast of the island. This is a typical Greek resort town with narrow streets and white houses, roofed with tiles.

In ancient times, during the wars with the Persians, the island had no special influence. In 480 BC, near the coast of Skiathos town was caught in a severe storm and was thoroughly damaged the fleet of the Persian king Xerxes I. the Greeks drove the Persians into a trap in a narrow Bay near Cape Artemisium between the island of Euboea and mainland Greece. It was the only chance to defeat the greatly superior numbers of the Persian army. Here took place the first battle, known in history as the Battle with Artemisia. The city was destroyed by Philip V of Macedon in 200 BC

In 1207 the island was captured by the GHISI brothers who built in Skiathos, a small fortress in the Venetian style similar to the fortress of Bourtzi in Nafplio for protection from pirates. Unfortunately, the fortress proved to be insufficiently reliable. In the mid-14th century the inhabitants left the city and settled in a more remote place on a high cliff in the Northern part of the island. The new settlement was called Castro. Back to the old part of Skiathos town, the population finally returned only in the early 19th century. The city was rebuilt. During the Second world war the island was completely destroyed during the bombing.

After the war, the city gradually recovered and in 1964 was designated a National tourist organization of Greece as a promising area for tourism development.
