About 5 km on North from Skiathos town on the island is the monastery of the Panagi Evangelisti. The cloister is located on a picturesque hillside surrounded by lush vegetation (mostly pines).

The monastery Panagi Evangelisti has important religious significance and is one of the main attractions of the island and also one of the most important religious centers in the archipelago of the Northern Sporades. The monastery was founded in 1794 by the Athonite monks and built according to the designs and ornaments from the Holy mountain Athos. Construction was directly involved local monk Grigorios Karastamatis and a monk from the island of Chios Nifon, which actually was the first Abbot of the monastery until 1809.

The monastery complex covers an area of over 2000 sqm Separate buildings are located strictly on the perimeter forming, thus, the monastery walls. In the period of the Greek war of independence, the monastery played an important role as a shelter for the Greek rebels. Here in September, 1807, was sworn in by such famous leaders of the Greek revolution, Theodoros kolokotronis, Andreas Miaoulis-Wackos and other insurgents. At the same time in the monastery was woven blessed by the rector and raised the first national Greek flag. In 1839, by the decision of the Synod at the monastery was exiled philosopher Theophilos kairis and spent 5 months. Since 1850 the importance of the monastery began to decline and gradually decreased and the number of resident monks.

In the monastery there is a small ecclesiastical Museum. In his exposition of the monastic vestments, rare books and manuscripts from the 17th century, the gospel of the 18th century, wooden and silver crosses, Byzantine icons and other religious relics.
