Among the numerous temples of the Greek island of Skiathos separate attention deserves the monastery of Panagia Kehre. It is located in the northwestern part of the island, about 8 km from the administrative center of the island of Skiathos town and is an important historical and architectural monument of the post-Byzantine period. Today, the monastery of Panagia Kehre is administered 7-th Department of Byzantine antiquities.
The monastery of Panagia Kehre dedicated to the Dormition of the blessed virgin. The temple is located on a picturesque, overgrown with pine and olive trees hill, the top of which offer superb panoramic views of the vast expanses of the Aegean sea and the Bay of Kehre. Actually from the beach Kehre and begins the road to the Holy abode.
Unfortunately, to this day the monastery complex, only the main Church room. The monastery as we see it today was built in the 18th century on the site of an ancient temple, presumably Dating from the 16 century. The interior of the Church is replete with fairly well-preserved frescoes, which are of high artistic and historical value. Very interesting and a wood-carved iconostasis.
Today, the monastery of Panagia Kehre is one of the main attractions of the island of Skiathos. Despite some "isolation" and a bit tedious uphill climb that will surely brighten up the magnificent scenery and an incredibly relaxing and cozy atmosphere of an ancient temple, it is very popular among tourists.
