The beautiful island of Skiathos, which lies in the Aegean sea, is famous not only for its magnificent beaches, but also a number of ancient monasteries. One of the most famous sacred monasteries of the island is the monastery of Panagia Menistry (virgin Conistra). It is located amidst a pine forest on the southwest side of the island, about 13 km from Skiathos town.

The Foundation of the monastery is associated with the appearance in these places icons of the virgin Mary. She was found tied with a rope to a pine branch. Icon fluttered in the wind and radiate divine light. Probably why she got the name "Kounistra" (in Greek "Kouno" means "trembling motion"). However, there are other versions. Subsequently it was called the monastery built here in 1650-ies.

Icon of the virgin Mary is the patroness of Skiathos and is now kept in the Cathedral of the capital. Every year, on November 21, Christians celebrate the entry into the temple of the blessed virgin. This day for the islanders is one of the most important religious festivals. On the eve of a solemn procession with the icon of the virgin Mary on foot moving from Skiathos town through the mountains to the monastery of Panagia Menistry. There is a nightlong vigil and morning the icon the same way back to the city.

The katholikon of the Church is one-nave Basilica with a dome. The interior of the Church buildings is impressive abundance of beautiful frescoes. Also deserves special attention gorgeous wooden gilded iconostasis.

Not so long ago in the monastery underwent a major restoration. The monastery of Panagia Menistry much less of the monastery of Panagia Evangelista and has a more modest story. However, the unique atmosphere of calm and comfort that prevails in the monastery, and special charm to the scenic area attracts many visitors.
