The tomb of Alexander I of Battenberg, the first after the destruction of the Ottoman Empire Autonomous ruler of Bulgaria, located in the center of Sofia. It is a historical and architectural, cultural and national monument. The entrance to the mausoleum is free.
Prince Alexander I, the son of the Prince of Hesse-Darmstadt, which, in turn, accounted for the Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna brother. He was born in Italy, in 1857. As a teenager, graduated from the German cadet College. Later, a volunteer went to the front to participate in the Russian-Turkish war. After the expulsion of the Turks in 1879, Alexander Battenberg was elected Prince of Principality of Bulgaria thanks to the protectorate of the Russian Tsar Alexander II. In the same period, the state of Bulgaria began to recover. However, in 1886, Prince Alexander from the throne refused and left Bulgaria and moved to Austria, where in 1889 as major General employed in an infantry regiment. Related to the care of the ruler was the pressure that Russia has had on domestic policy of the Bulgarian state. The name of the former Governor also had to change – the new life he started as the count of Hartenau. Got family, children (which, incidentally, were named Bulgarian names – Vera-Tsvetana and Krum-Asen).
Died Prince in 1893 in Austria. According to the decision of the National Assembly of Bulgaria, as well as the dying wish of the Prince, his body was taken for burial to Sofia. The coffin with the remains of the ruler of Bulgaria kept in the Church of St. George until 1987, when it was built the mausoleum.
The author of the project – Swiss architect Jakob Mayer. Building height 11 m made in ancient Greek architectural style, height to the crown – 1, 7 m. the Interior of the mausoleum belongs to the artist Haralambi Tachev, and the sarcophagus is a polished Carrara marble. The remains of the Prince were buried in underground tombs.
