Andrew's Cathedral is one of the most ancient and revered temples of St. Petersburg. Located on Vasilievsky island. The monument of architecture of XVIII century.

In the second decade of the eighteenth century the administrative and business center of the city was moved with the hare on Vasilievsky island. Peter I wanted to be here before Twelve colleges building was erected a temple dedicated to Saint Andrew. But it was built after the death of the Emperor.

In 1728, on Vasilievsky island, at the intersection of Grand Avenue and 6 lines was allocated a plot of land, where was built a wooden Church. Presumably, the author of the project was A. D. Trezzini. In 1732, the Church was consecrated in the name of St. Andrew the Apostle. Was moved to a dilapidated wooden iconostasis from the Church of the Nativity of the blessed virgin Mary, who was in Posadskaya Sloboda, Petersburg on the island. The Empress Anna Ioannovna donated funds for utensils and vestments. The temple was intended for festival and celebration of the knights of the order of St. Andrew. In 1744 he received the status of Cathedral.

At a solemn Church services came the Royal family and many famous personalities of the time, including the Lomonosov and V. Trediakovsky. The wooden Church building was cold and cramped, with 1 side chapel and was not pretty. Therefore, in 1740-1745, construction began on the new Church project Trezzini. The rite of consecration in honor of the Three Holy Hierarchs took place in 1760. The iconostasis, the altar and other utensils were transferred from the former house of the temple of Prince Menshikov.

During a thunderstorm in July 1761 Andrew wooden Church burned down, and in the summer of 1764 was laid for the new Church, which was erected under the direction of A. Vista. She remained to our time. Only to 1780, the building was completed. The new temple was the center of the knights of the order of St. Andrew the Apostle. In 1786 bell tower was erected, and 4 years later the chapel. In 1797, over the entrance was installed bas-relief depicting the order of St. Andrew, which is in the hands of two angels. In the II half of the XIX century when the Cathedral was a parish charitable society, containing a shelter for children and terminally ill people, cheap housing for women.

After 1917 the Church was looted and closed. It was used as a warehouse. The chapel at Nikolaevsk (Annunciation) bridge, due to the installation of the monument to Lieutenant P. Schmidt, destroyed. In 1928, with the bell tower and the bells were removed, they were subsequently remelted. During the war years of the great Patriotic damaged the roof, facades, the iconostasis and the interior of the Church.

In 1992 the Cathedral was restored and returned to the parish. Worship services are held daily.

Graceful Cathedral building painted in a pale pink color. The high dome of the Church and bell tower can be admired. The Cathedral is crowned with 1 large and four smaller domes. The architectural style can be described as a transition from Baroque to classicism.

The best decoration of the Cathedral stands a three-tiered carved gilded iconostasis. Its height is 17 meters. Among other values, you can mark silver altar vestments weight 115 kg in the main altar, the gospel in a silver frame, the icon of the exaltation, the altarpiece of the Lord of hosts.

There is a legend that is buried near the Church Ekaterina A. Dolgoruky ("failed Empress"), was the bride of the young Emperor Peter II, who died of smallpox before the wedding.
